How do I find out if a trust fund was set up for my daughter?

Studly asked:

About 15 years ago, a friend of my wife set up an educational trust fund for our children. We have not heard from her since. Is there a way to find out where this trust is at?

If it still exists, and if it has your daughter’s social security number, you may be able to find it. If there has been no action in the trust and it was at a bank, it may have gone to the state, and you would have to check the state’s unclaimed money list.

If it was in your wife’s friend’s ssn, it may not be findable by you, especially if the friend is no longer findable herself or is no longer friendly.

There are trusts and there are trusts. Do you have any idea specifically what kind of “education trust?” Do you have anything in writing that she established such a trust?
